The Gazette- Interest rate hikes are on hold until at least the spring and maybe as long as late 2011, analysts say, as the Bank of Canada decided Tuesday to keep its policy rate unchanged amid weaker-than-anticipated growth, especially in the United States.

The Canadian dollar fell by more than two cents at one point following the decision, as the central bank signaled the country would need to rely more on net exports for growth — a sign, economists added, the loonie’s value would be a key consideration in future rate decisions…

New home prices rise surprisingly in August: Statistics Canada

The Vancouver Sun- New home prices edged up unexpectedly in August, led mainly by increases in Eastern Canada, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.

Prices rose 0.1 per cent during the month, after declining 0.1 per cent in July, the federal agency said.

Economists had expected new home prices to decline by about 0.1 per cent in August.

The biggest monthly increases were in Hamilton, Ont. (up 0.9 per cent), Windsor, Ont. (up 0.4 per cent), and the Toronto and Oshawa, Ont., region (up 0.3 per cent)…

The Vancouver Sun- B.C.’s residential housing construction continued to rebound in September with another boost in new-home starts as starts continued to slow on a nationwide basis, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. reported Friday.

Builders started work on 2,305 new homes in B.C. in September, bringing the province’s total starts to 17,791 for the first nine months of 2010, a 91-per-cent increase from the same period of 2009. However, September’s starts, extrapolated over 12 months, raised the pace of construction to 26,500 units on what economists call the seasonally adjusted annual rate…
