HST starting to show up on bills … and it’s no mistake

The new harmonized sales tax is making its first appearance on many bills arriving this week.

And, no, it’s not a mistake.

The HST kicks in July 1, and since many everyday services are billed in advance, the HST is now being included.

For instance, bills to Shaw and Telus customers this month will have three lines of tax – the Goods and Services Tax, the Provincial Sales Tax, as well as the HST.

And while it looks like more tax (and probably is), it’s not double taxation. The companies are billing the GST and PST for services up to June 30, and the HST after that…

Times Colonist- Vancouver Island housing starts slipped in May from a month earlier, but year-to-date figures are well ahead of last year’s pace, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Analysts said some Island homebuilders got in the ground early to beat B.C.’s upcoming HST, while others are holding off to gauge its impact.

"Some of the market has been driven by concerns about the HST and builders wanting to get projects up prior to the HST … and also the anticipation of increased interest rates," said Casey Edge, executive officer of the Victoria office of the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association.

Slated to come into effect July 1, the harmonized sales tax will combine the seven per cent provincial sales tax and five per cent GST…

National Post- With all the billboards springing up around the city, it’s hard to miss the 13% harmonized sales tax (HST) slated to become law July 1.

For many, the tax is just a convenient combination of 8% provincial sales tax (PST) and 5% goods and services tax (GST).

But for the home renovation industry, which contributes $20-billion and 195,000 jobs to Ontario’s economy, the HST may have some hidden challenges.

Figuring homeowners will rush to get projects in under the deadline and avoid the tax, the government has also added a May 1 deadline clause. Essentially, any project that involves permanently installed goods ordered by May 1, but not completed by July 1, is subject to the whole 13% tax….
