Times Colonist- The prices contractors are charging for new houses in Greater Victoria are slipping — and builders say it has a lot to do with the controversial harmonized sales tax.
Victoria and Vancouver each saw price tags trimmed by 0.4 per cent in September compared to August, while Hamilton, Ont., dropped by 0.1 per cent, Statistics Canada said yesterday.
"In Vancouver and Hamilton, a number of builders reported lower negotiated selling prices in September, while in Victoria some builders offered discounts to spur sales," the federal agency said…

Financial Post- The housing sector received a small boost yesterday with news from Statistics Canada that new home prices continuing to climb in August, albeit slowly.
The StatsCan data, which shows prices up 2.9% from a year ago, follows reports from last month that sales of existing homes climbed in August for the first time in four months. Existing home prices continued to fall, dropping 1.6% in August from a month ago…

The Vancouver Sun- New home prices edged up unexpectedly in August, led mainly by increases in Eastern Canada, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.
Prices rose 0.1 per cent during the month, after declining 0.1 per cent in July, the federal agency said.
Economists had expected new home prices to decline by about 0.1 per cent in August.
The biggest monthly increases were in Hamilton, Ont. (up 0.9 per cent), Windsor, Ont. (up 0.4 per cent), and the Toronto and Oshawa, Ont., region (up 0.3 per cent)…

The Vancouver Sun- A swing of the housing cycle back into building multi-family projects gave a big boost to British Columbia’s construction sector in August, figures released Thursday by Statistics Canada show.
B.C. saw builders take out $880 million worth of building permits in August, with the biggest portion of that — $621 million – coming from residential construction projects.
That $621-million figure is 20-per-cent higher than July, and 73 per cent above the same month a year ago.
Permit applications are an indicator of builders’ immediate intentions to build, and Statistics Canada found that in B.C., contractors are returning to multi-family townhouse and condominium projects…
