Victoria’s housing market improves

Times Colonist- Victoria, Vancouver and Abbotsford recorded increases in housing starts in August, with expectations that all three housing markets will remain positive, according to figures released yesterday by the Conference Board of Canada.

Vancouver showed a sharp increase and was ranked fifth of 27 metropolitan areas surveyed by the Conference Board.

Victoria region bucks trend, building permits soar

Times Colonist- Victoria’s construction industry countered the national trend in May as building permits jumped by 40 per cent, buoyed by an increase in residential and institutional construction.

While Canadian building permits fell significantly in May, due mainly to a drop in construction of single-family homes and commercial buildings, Greater Victoria reported a total of 462 permits in May valued at $67 million, up from $48 million in May 2009.

Year-to-date, however, Victoria remains behind last year’s pace with permits totaling $287.5 million through the first five months of the year, compared with $385 million over the same period last year…
