"Housing is being driven by politics in British Columbia and the situation is being made worse by the unstable political situation," said Casey Edge, executive director of the Canadian Homebuilders Association in Victoria. "B.C. is unique in the sense that the province is hesitant to interfere with community charters, so there is a constant theme of municipalities adding new requirements to developments — which to builders is cost."

A Victoria developer wants to build a 224-unit residential complex across from Mayfair Shopping Centre and designate nearly half as affordable housing to address the critical need for lower income workers and families in the region.

Four out of four BC cities included in an international survey earned rankings of “severely unaffordable.” Vancouver was judged to be the third-worst of 325 cities in developed countries world-wide. The number of years of annual income required to by a home — between 5.9 and 7.1 — in Victoria, Abbotsford and Kelowna was also found to be worrisomely high.

Calgary Herald- Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Thursday he is not concerned about slumping housing sales in some Canadian markets and has no plans to reverse mortgage restrictions imposed earlier this year.
Housing sales plunged dramatically last month in cities such as Calgary, Victoria and Greater Vancouver compared with one year ago.
But Flaherty, in Calgary to deliver a speech on Ottawa’s proposal for a national securities regulator, said he believes the housing slowdown is a sign that consumers are being more careful about financial risk-taking. He hinted the federal government wouldn’t shy away from additional mortgage restrictions, if needed…
